If you are in need of a new HVAC system, the many choices available might seem confusing. How do you know what type of system to buy? What size? What features? With new products on the market everyday, the shopping experience can be frustrating. If you are overwhelmed by all your choices, check out the tips listed below for some great advice that will help you to pick the right system.
Before you call someone to help you fix your system, be sure to know what sort of system you have in place. Find out the brand and model and, if possible, dig out the maintenance history. This will ensure that you can give your new contractor all the information they need.
Help the outside condenser fan run efficiently by cleaning the coils and fan blades before the summer starts. Always make sure you shut off the power before you do any work on the unit other than superficial cleaning. Also, make sure you remove any debris or leaves from the condenser unit outside.
When you are cutting the grass, be sure not to cover your outdoor units with clippings. Shoot the grass away from the unit. The same should happen if you are blowing leaves, so be especially careful when you are going by your exterior HVAC devices whenever you are moving debris.
When the trees are losing their leaves, your HVAC unit can suffer. Be sure to clean your fan grill frequently when trees nearby are shedding. Your fan needs an unobstructed way to get air inside, and the more blocked up it becomes, the more headaches will develop for you with the system.
If you own your own home or are allowed to, replace your single pane windows with double paned versions. Double pane windows help minimize your air conditioning use in the summer by keeping the cooler air inside your home. This effect also helps retain heated air during the colder months.
To help keep your energy costs down, have your heating and cooling system serviced at least once a year. During this service visit, they will inspect the motor of the system, oil the moving parts and check the freon levels in the system. These simple thing will keep your system running at peak performance.
Turn off your air conditioner when no one is home to help save money. When you turn it off, the house heats up, but only to a certain threshold. If you leave it on all day, it’s fighting the heat constantly, meaning it’s using a lot of electricity to do its job.
Never let your home reach a dangerously hot temperature. Air conditioners really can only cool a home down about 20 degrees Fahrenheit within a reasonable amount of time. If your home gets above 100 degrees Fahrenheit, you’ll only cool down to still above 80. Depending on humidity levels, this isn’t even a safe temperature for a human body to sleep at to recover from summer heat.
