It is frustrating to need work done to your HVAC system when the weather is at it’s peak. The key to finding the right people to install new equipment or repair the old is to learn everything possible about the topic in advance. Read on and you will get the information that you need.
What system do you have? You need this information to tell your contractor. Learn the brand, model, and if you have it, the maintenance history. This will enable you to give your chosen contractor any information they might need.
Tour your home before calling a contractor. Figure out which rooms are hot and cold. This gives the repairer a starting point to work from.
Before selecting a HVAC repairman, know what you need done. Providing you with an accurate estimate over the telephone may be difficult to impossible is they can’t see the system you have. It will be more difficult for him to assist you over the phone without the information readily available. Make an effort to gather all information you need before making the phone call.
If you have oil ports as part of the fan condenser, annual lubrication is key. You will notice these ports have a rubber or metal cap covering them. Put 10 drops of lightweight, non-detergent SAE oil in each port. Be careful not to use too much.
When selecting a location for an outdoor compressor, opt for a shady area, if possible. When the unit sucks in cooler air, then less work is required to cool it further which in turn boosts the units efficiency.
When the weather cools down, turn your outdoor condenser off. Once the temperature drops into the 50s, the unit should no longer be on. Your system will work longer for you this way.
If you can, install double-paned windows throughout your home. Having double pane windows allows your air conditioning unit to be run much less during the summer, because the cool air is kept inside the home. This also helps keep it warm in the winter.
Don’t ever let your home temperature get dangerously high. Air conditioners cannot sufficiently cool down unreasonably high temps. A home that is over one hundred degrees will only be cooled to around eighty. This won’t be a healthy environment to live in.
Without the correct information, hiring a HVAC professional might be intimidating. But, it does not need to be terribly difficult. Hopefully, you’re now ready to tackle any issues that come up with your HVAC system.
